Tears, tributes, frugly fruit & Cruella revealed...a week that was.

This week I was brought to tears. A little act of kindness by Ben Jackson, an Australian sheep farmer in Guyra, who due to border closures couldn’t attend his beloved aunt's funeral in Queensland after she passed away from cancer, chose to honour her in the most spectacular, creative and memorable way. As he fed his sheep, he laid out the grain by hand in the shape of a heart, and as the dozens of sheep moved towards the grain to eat, he then captured the heart shaped formation of sheep using a drone overhead in the sky. He later said that he hoped that when he did this, his aunt was ‘having a peep through the clouds and was able to see it from heaven’. What a wonderful tribute and beautiful way to show your love for a much loved aunt.

Have you ever felt rejected? The world is full of rejects, and in Australia the cosmetic standards of supermarkets means that an astounding amount of perfectly good food never reaches our plates. Up to one quarter of all produce doesn’t leave the farm because it is deemed to be imperfect. This week I stumbled across a company on a mission to bring perfectly imperfect produce direct to our doorstep. Good & Fugly helps to fight waste by rescuing these fugly darlings and giving them a good home….your home. You too can help save the planet by signing up for a delivery of perfectly good and fugly fresh seasonal produce that is affordable, convenient and delicious. You can learn more about the fruit and veggie boxes at goodandfugly.com.au

Did you know that the Disney character Cruella De Vil was based on a woman the animator Mark Davis had met in real life as well as the actor Tallulah Bankhead? With the words Cruel and Devil literally in her name she had to be one of Disney’s most evil characters, and that she is. Cruella is an eccentric fashion obsessed baroness who wishes to use the skins of 99 Dalmatian puppies to create a spotted fur coat. Her infatuation with furs drives her to murderous insanity. On Disney +, Cruella, played by academy award winner Emma Stone from La La Land, follows a young woman con-artist named Estella and reveals the series of events that cause her to embrace her evil side and become the harsh and revenge-bent Cruella.

During the final week of Winter and after being teased with the warmth of early spring days, the temperatures unexpectedly plummeted again giving rise to the desire for yet another bowl of hearty warm soup. This Creamy Dreamy Cauliflower Soup recipe from RecipeTin Eats was quick and easy to prepare, and ticked all the boxes in terms of nourishment and eating for comfort. You can find the recipe here.

Is lockdown starting to get you down? Maybe you’re not alone. This week we gazed out the window to see the long concertinaed cord section of a vacuum cleaner dangling in the upper branches of a tall tree. Intrigued, we went out onto the terrace to investigate further, only to find the remains of the vacuum cleaner on the ground below. We turned our imagination to various scenarios, the most likely being that the occupants of the top floor penthouse had, in a fit of rage, hurled the said vacuum cleaner off the balcony. I’ll leave you to add your own dimension and interpretation to this unusual turn of events.

Until next time may your days be both serendipitous and enjoyable.
